The AR-10 rifle was designed in 1957 by Eugene Stoner and Robert Fremont for ArmaLite. There were 9 total models of the AR-10. The last model, the AR-10A2, remained in production until 1985 when it was replaced with the M15A2 rifle. The design is a scaled down version of the 7.62 mm NATO caliber AR-15 rifle, which ArmaLite had submitted to U.S. military adoption to overcome its previous lack of a large caliber select fire service rifle in that chambering after losing a contest to adopt a . 30 caliber M1 carbine in 1957. The AR-10 features a lightweight, short barrel, free floating barrel design, and a one-piece upper receiver. Although the AR-10 does not have a forward assist lug like its fully automatic sibling, it has an extractor that provides positive extraction in the magazine when the magazine is empty. The rifle is one of the smallest in its chambering to undergo reliability trials under MIL-SPEC testing conditions, achieving good results with only minimal maintenance requirements when compared to other designs. The AR-10 was made by ArmaLite Firearms from 1958 - 1985, but production ceased when ArmaLite was bought out by LMT Corporation in 1979. ArmaLite continued to sell the AR-10 after 1985 until LMT Corporation discontinued the AR-10 in favor of the .308 Winchester M14 rifle chambered for 5.56mm NATO, which was adopted by ArmaLite as its sole small arms product line. From 1968 to 1986, ArmaLite manufactured rifles for export only. The guns are marked "ArmaLite USA" or "AR-USA" on the receiver, but are usually found stamped with other models or foreign markings. Some of these were manufactured under license from Stoner Arms Company, but many were Stoner designs made by Stoner Arms company employees at Stoner's plant in Covina, California. There are approximately 100,000 AR-10 rifles in service with U.S. military forces worldwide. They continue to see service in the hands of special operations organizations, including the 75th Ranger Regiment, which uses them in .308 caliber for their marksmanship program. The 10th Mountain Division also uses AR-10s for its Sniper program. The AR-10A2 is a more refined version of the original AR-10 designed by ArmaLite's chief firearms designer Eugene Stoner. It was designed to be an upgrade to existing 7.62×51mm NATO (.308 Winchester) AR-10s already in service with various military and law enforcement organizations around the world – including U. S. special operations forces – that were converted from the original semi-automatic to the fully automatic configuration by removing the original bolt carrier and installing a new AR-10A2 bolt carrier group. In addition, the AR-10A2 was modified with a heavier barrel and an improved flash hider as well as a redesigned handguard to improve accuracy and designs to allow for use of various front sights from other manufacturers. In 1987, SIG Sauer sold ArmaLite's intellectual property rights to AKMS rifles in caliber 7.62×39mm under license from ArmaLite Inc., although AKMS rifles made by others continued to be produced by ArmaLite until eventual closure of the company in 1998. cfa1e77820
